Whether you collect antique scales or not, there is no denying that these are an extremely attractive thing. Made in Brandenburg by J. Pintus & Co to Schoenmann’s patent, they date to around 1880 and are very solidly constructed in brass, steel and mahogany. Interestingly they are marked as ‘decimal scales’, Germany having only just moved across from imperial weights in 1873.
The scales are clearly stamped in several places with the German Post Office insignia as well as the word ‘Berlin’. Compared to the usual post office scales, these have been very finely engineered and must have been extremely expensive to purchase new. Probably for this reason they appear not to have been mass produced and so far I have struggled to find anything on the internet about Schoenmann or these scales. If you know anything do let me know!
They are offered in excellent untouched original and fully working condition. They measure 27cm wide x 16cm deep x 24cm high.
