This early 1 valve LF amplifier dates to c1924 and was made by the English Company Cinechrome Instruments and released under the brand name ‘Cinchro’. As the name suggests Cinechrome’s main business was in Movie Projectors, but like many they branched out into Radios for a few years to try to capture some of that lucrative new market. As far as I’m aware they only ever made a few models.
While Crystal radios were amazing in their ability to work without a separate power source, the reception was usually woefully weak requiring headphones to hear. To help solve this many companies at the time released their own small amplifiers (such as this one for sale) which at an extra cost could be purchased to allow their Crystal set to be used with a small external speaker.
Early amps in any form are remarkably rare now as many would simply have been thrown away or stripped for parts by amateurs. This example is in lovely visual condition internally and externally but has not been tested. The accompanying DER A124 valve retains its BBC approval stamp and is likewise in visually nice shape, however under load it only gave us the very slightest hint of power so is sold as non-working also.
