This is a full set of 10 original offset lithographic prints by Computer Art pioneer Georg Nees from his 1969 series ‘Computergrafik Computerplastic’. Interest in Nees and his peers has understandably jumped over the last few years as society looks closer at the foundations of AI and human-computer interaction.
While individual works by Nees do come to market, it is extremely rare to find a full original set of this seminal series. These images which all measure 30cm x 30cm were curated by Siemens and printed in 1969 for the folio of 10 images entitled ‘Computergrafik Computerplastic’. In 1969 Siemems exhibited at a pavilion of the Hanover Fair and according to the Siemens archive this folio was produced to give away there. Nees worked as a computer programmer for Siemens so it is natural that they would be happy to publish his work although naturally the print run for this folio would have been very limited.
Unsigned, these are genuine period prints created as offset lithographs on slightly glossy paper. Very unusually it comes with the original German description on silver foil card which I presume was included as part of the folio. This set was possibly used for an exhibition at the time or for private display by an enthusiast as each has been identically framed in a simple pine box frame. These frames will date to the early 1970s at the latest and being behind glass have helped keep the prints in very good condition. There is a bit of light crinkling to one image only and the rest are free from damage or fading etc.
I was very lucky to stumble across this set recently and doubt I will find another complete set of these prints any time soon.
