Iconic 1980s Nakamichi Dragon Cassette Deck

The Nakamichi Dragon is widely considered the finest Cassette deck of its day. First released in 1982 it was an instant hit. Despite the gradual decline in cassette use over CDs, the Dragon was sold all the way through to 1994 and today remains a highly desirable machine for any enthusiast.

There is a lot of technical detail on the internet about what made the Dragon such an iconic and superior product to its competitors, but amongst other things it was the world’s first production tape recorder with an automatic azimuth correction system. This meant it was able to compensate when the tape was slightly askew. In reality while other machines were able to offer better mechanical construction, the sound quality of the Dragon was second to none.

This machine has had only one owner as it was purchased new by a friend of my family. I’ve also been told that he barely used it. More than any other cassette deck the Nakamichi Dragon is a very complicated machine inside and requires real skill when servicing and adjusting. Thankfully one of my regular restorers Dolman Audio Visual (click name for link) is fast becoming the go to specialist for Nakamichi repairs in the UK, and he has meticulously gone through this machine for me changing belts, oiling parts and calibrating everything with precision and care.

This machine runs on UK 240v.
