‘Television A Monthly Magazine’ was the world’s first television journal and was edited by Alfred Dinsdale. Produced from March 1928 onwards this soon became the de-facto magazine for very early TV enthusiasts drawing articles from the top TV and scientific pioneers of the day (even including Alexander Fleming). It covered the early global developments of television in great depth and was of course packed full of fascinating adverts, stories and related photographs.
The magazine was part of the newly formed Television Society and Alfred Dinsdale (as the self-proclaimed story teller of Television) would personally attend and record many of the landmark events covered in the journal. Also, as the launch of the magazine pre-dated even the first commercially available TV sets, it dealt instead with the historic and technological developments, gave amateurs a space to share their own attempts, and speculated about the role that TV might play in the future. A read through the pages shows this really was an exciting time to be interested in Television.
This magazine is a classic must-have item for any serious collector or institution. Although the magazine was naturally sold as individual issues, it could also be purchased bound in volumes direct from the publisher. This is an official publisher bound volume and as such it includes a front index to all the articles, but the front and back covers of each issue were omitted. The volume 1 edition covers Issues 1-12 from March 1928- February 1929.
As an ex-university owned volume the cover on the bound book has some wear and the binding has split along a few of the preliminary pages. Some have been sealed with archival tape by a previous owner. There is also some light foxing and browning to the pages, but for such a rare volume it is still offered in good original condition.
