In 1951 Paris hosted a large influential conference on Computing entitled ‘Les machines à calculer et la pensée humaine’ (translated as “Calculating Machines and Human Thinking”). Attended by 268 leading computer scientists from 10 countries the proceedings were all translated into French only and published into this book in 1953.
By all standards this was an important event with many of the most influential computer scientists coming together to discuss the new field. Although it is commonly believed that the first conference on Artificial Intelligence occurred in Dartmouth, USA in 1956, due to the nature of the talks at the 1951 Paris symposium many have instead hailed this the first AI gathering.
