Early GEC 2370 Broadcasting Lip Microphone from 1947

This rather elegant and unusual larger sized ribbon microphone was designed in England by the General Electric Company as model 2370 and dates to 1947 or just after. Although little information seems to exist about the history of this particular model, the internals are based on a 1947 ribbon patent. With its stylishly curved gilt brass mid-century casing it was most likely intended as an outdoor broadcast lip microphone for sporting events etc.

What makes this particular example far more unusual than other known copies of the 2370 (and strongly suggests it was indeed created for public broadcasting) is it lacks any marking at all. Where on others the top is emblazed with the name ‘GEC’, on this example the top is just a blank brass sheet where a TV network or radio station could easily slip their name over.  The only markings are on the underside where it is faintly stamped ‘patent applied for’ meaning this was a very early release of the 2370 model.

It is being offered in completely original condition so you can decide for yourself if you would like to restore this to studio ready condition or just leave it as found to include in a display of mics or post war broadcasting. Of course if you would like this refurbished then we are happy to get this professionally done via Stewart at Xaudia.com who specialises in the restoration of vintage ribbon mics.
