‘Interlaser’ Optical Data System c1981

This is a fascinating piece of forgotten tech from the early 1980s. Originally created in 1979 by a small UK firm called Modular Technology this set up was able to send digital information such as telephone and computer data optically between two points. This was just a few years before mobile phone networks emerged and all data was still travelling via wires.

These receivers were comfortably able to send and collect the information up to 1km away making it ideal for businesses or sites unable to easily connect themselves up via a landline. Although British Telecom were initially very sceptical of the system when it was launched, they did finally look into purchasing it in 1981 when they were updating the City of London communication System. This pair of devices for sale ultimately came from BT and were most likely used in those trials. It was also trialled/ used a few years later by the Department of the Environment for use supporting the Traffic Network (ie mounted onto traffic lights).

There is little information about this fascinating Interlaser product on the internet at the moment so I’ve put together a preliminary blog post containing what I’ve discovered so far. This grouping consists of a complete LH-10 system (which uses class 3B lasers) with its relevant leads and paperwork which (strangely) date from between 1981-87. The equipment itself I believe dates to around 1981 from the address and relatively low serial number. As stated already this group came from the family of a gentleman who used to work for British Telecom back when they were reviewing the system so I’m sure was one of the kits trialled by BT.
