As well as being a stylish design, this part roll of wallpaper is actually a very rare survivor. Created for the electronics firm Philips, it was reputedly designed by the Dutchman Mathieu Clement and printed by the French firm of Emaillo-Gavure of 16 Rue de Rivoli, Paris. In 1923 amid the first flurry of commercially produced radios, Philips decided to dip their toe in this very new market by releasing the Miniwatt Radio Valve. It was an instant success, and in 1927 they finally launched their own branded Radio the Type 2501. This unique wallpaper must have been commissioned by Philips for use in stores and at trade stands to publicise their Miniwatt valve.
As a brand Philips have always been extremely conservative with their logo modifying it only slightly and for short periods at a time. The form and colour of the logo shown on this wallpaper appears to have only been used in 1922 and was changed from blue to red at some point in 1923. As such it allows us to date this wallpaper very accurately.
This unused wallpaper roll is just under 4m long in total and is 50.3 cm wide. It is offered in as-found untouched condition but please see the images for condition as 2 metres are in good condition, while the other 2 metres (nearest the end) are not. I presume at some point half got unrolled, torn and then crushed flat under a heavy weight leaving all the horizontal fold marks. Even so, what you do get is 2m of very stylish and unique wallpaper in good condition which would look fantastic framed on a wall.
